Born in Sao Paulo in Brazil on the 23rd of May 1972, he first drove a go-kart at the age of 10, winning his first Brazilian Go-kart Championship title - the first of three similar titles - a year later. In 1989 he progressed to Formula Ford finishing fourth in the Brazilian Championship in his first year. In 1990 Rubens moved to Europe where he won the European Formula Opel Championship and, one year later, the British Formula 3 Championship. After finishing third in the Formula 3000 Championship in 1992, he was signed by Jordan for 1993 where he was to stay for four years, and debuted at the second race of the season at the Brazilian GP in March. In his second year with Jordan-Hart he finished sixth in the Drivers' rankings and got his first podium finish - third in the Pacific GP. A second podium finish followed in 1995 (second in Canada) and in 1997 he signed for Stewart-Ford, taking an excellent second place at Monaco in the wet conditions that exalt his driving style. Barrichello joined Ferrari for the 2000 season arriving second in his first ever race for the Prancing Horse in Australia.
